Claddagh
400 years ago a young man, Richard Joyce, was fishing off Ireland's west coast, when he was captured and placed into
slavery in West Africa. His owner, a Moorish goldsmith trained him in the art of jewelery making. In remembering his
beloved Ireland he fashioned a ring with two hands holding a heart with a crown. The hands were for friendship,
the heart for love, and the crown for loyalty. Years later upon returning to Ireland he found his sweetheart
had waited for him and the ring became her wedding band. They settled in his home village, Claddagh. Sadly, this small
fishing village near Galway, Ireland no longer exists.
Traditionally, the Claddagh ring is given as a gift rather than purchased for one self. The ring when worn with the
heart facing away from the wearer's heart signifies availability. When worn facing towards the wear, the heart is taken.
