MacLean Clan

The name means son of the servant of St. John and the clan descends from Gilleean of the Battleaxe. Their lands were principally Mull and the adjacent mainland. There Principal castle was Duart. In the 13th century the clan divided into two branches, the MacLean of Duart and the MacLaines of Lochbuie. After a long simmering rivalry the two branches have forgotten their differences. They fought at the Battle of Harlow. The MacLean of Duart fell at Flodden. They fought a t Inverlochy and Inverkeithing, where seven brothersdied protecting their chief. They fought under Dundee and they joined Mar in The Fifteen. They fought at Culloden under the Duke of Perth where the were in the front rank.
