MacDonald This is the largest and perhaps the oldest of all the Scottish clans. Donald was the 1st Lord of the Isles in the 13th century. The clan increased and ruled as independent princes over a vast region. MacDonalds fought valiantly with King Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. In recognition of their loyalty the King proclaimed that Clan Donald would always occupy right wing of the Scottish army, the most honored position on the battlefield. Later they supported the Stewarts. MacDonalds have long been a force to be reckoned with whether on the field of battle or in a clan feud. Motto “Per Mare Per Terra” (By land and by sea)
