MacDonald of Clanranald
The progenitor of the foremost branch of the ClanDonald was Ranald, son of the Lord of the Isles. Fierce and warlike was their reputation and like many Highland clans feuds were common. In 1544 at the Battle of Blar-na-leine they defeated Clan Fraser. They followed Montrose in the 17th century and participated in the Jacobite Rising of 1715. Prince Charles Edward Stewart raised his standard at Glenfinnan (MacDonald territory) in September 1745. The ancient fortress of the Clanranalds is Castle Tirim. It stands on the south shore of Loch Moidart. Built at the head of a low peninsula it becomes an island at high tide a uniquely strategic position.
