Johnstone Clan
Crest and Tartan
This ancient and powerful border clan was known as the “rough-footed” clan. They were centered in Annandale and guarded the Western Marches for over six hundred years. Lochwood was the center of power for clan Johnstone in 12th and 13th century. Not a beautiful castle nestled high on a tree covered hill in plain view of the highway, rather the opposite. In those early days of “rugging and riving” the game was this. You steal cattle and sheep from your neighbors in England or sometimes rival clans such as the Chrichtons and Maxwells. Lochwood was thus a rugged fortress built in a boggy isolated location far from the main roads. It was the equivalent of the “Hole-in-the-wall” gang and there was even a box canyon to hide stolen cattle in. It was called the “Marquis beef-stand”. From this and other isolated strongholds the Johnstone made a good living for hundreds of years.
