Grant Clan
Crest and Tartan
The Grants are traced to Nottingham in the early 13th Century. The Grants forfeited lands for their support of the Old Pretender in 1715. They petitioned for twenty years for its return only to place it at risk again in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. After the battle of Culloden Patrick Grant and seven other clansmen guarded the Prince’s desperate escape through Scotland most desolate reaches. Many Grants were persecuted, hung and deported for their part in the rising. During the Highland Clearances Sir James Grant founded Grantown-on-Spey to encourage economic development. His efforts improved the conditions and prevented many people from forced eviction and poverty.
