Farquharson Clan
Crest and Tartan
The family claims descent from the Thanes of Fife. From the early 14th Century this family assembled considerable lands in Upper Deeside. Farquharsons have long been supporters of the Jacobite cause. In 1689 the “Black Colonel” John Farquharson set fire to his home Braemar Castle to prevent government forces from garrisoning troops there. The government rebuilt Braeman in 1748 and garrisoned troops until 1797. Ironically, it was returned to the Farquharsons. In 1746 a defiant Anne Farquharson supported Prince Charlie even against her husband’s wishes. She raised 600 men for the Jacobite cause. When a powerful force of Government troops were sent to capture Moy she and five of her retainers convinced the leaders that an overwhelming Jacobite army was camped within striking distance. The opposing forces retreated. Lady Anne thus earned the nickname “Colonel Anne” for the “Rout of Moy”.
