Cunningham Clan
Crest and Tartan
In 1162 Wernebald, an Angelo-Saxon warrior was given the Ayreshire land called Cunningham for valliant military service. In 1263 Harvey Cunningham assisted King Alexander III in defeating Viking King Harkon of Norway at the Battle of Largs. The Viking threat is turned and to this day the victory is celebrated annually with the burning of a longboat in Largs. More land was awarded to the Cunninghams for serving the Bruce. “The good earl” Alexander Cunningham was a supporter of John Knox. An ancient yew tree standing at Finlaystone stood witness to one of Knox’s fiery sermons.
