Perhaps the name is an obscure title, in Gaelic it means Keeper of the dogs. Lands in Dumbarton are assembled into a sizeable estate by the fourteenth century. In the early 1600’s a feud with neighboring MacGregors becomes a bloody affair. The defeated Colquhouns petitioned King James and terrible sentence is handed their enemies. The name MacGregor is banned and they are persecuted until their restoration in 1775.
