Of Norman ancestry few have done more for Scotland than King Robert the Bruce. During the fierce battles for Independence Robert defeated the English in 1314 at Bannockburn. Scotland’s Independence was acknowledged in the Treaty of Northampton signed in the year 1328. The Bruce died in 1329 and was buried in Dunfermline. Sir James Douglas was quested to carry Bruce’s heart to the Holly Land. Douglas however died fighting the Moors in Spain and the heart was buried in Melrose Abby.
